Millfield School Middle Distance Tri Review

Tri suit sunburn

Don’t forget the suntan lotion!

A few weeks ago I was speaking to a more experienced triathlete about competing in an Ironman and he suggested that I try a middle distance, or half ironman distance, race this year to test the water, so to speak. I could only find one that fit the bill, that I could make it to, and that was the Millfield School event run by last weekend in Street, Somerset. The weather was near perfect and the field got culled at the last minute by a variety of bugs and other excuses, so the pool swim was positively spacious. Read on to find out how it went. Millfield School Middle Distance Tri – Cunning plan

I have just received notification of my start time for the Millfield School Middle Distance Tri. I will be in Wave 1, starting at 8am tomorrow morning. It looks like the field has been decimated by bugs, so the entry numbers have dropped in the last couple of days. This means that I am sharing my lane of the 50m pool with only two other swimmers. That’s positively luxurious! The event is a 1900m pool swim, followed by a 56 mile cycle to the top of Chedder Gorge and back, with a mixed terrain half marathon around the school grounds. Read on for my race plan, including strategy and nutrition information. [Read more…]

Ride With Brad – Sportive Review and how I met Bradley Wiggins…briefly

The only picture not provided by Henry, if you wondered about the poor composition!

“Go on Richard!” Came the voice from behind me. I turned around and there he was, Bradley Wiggins, fresh from his Tour De France win and Olympic Gold Medal. I paniced, but was reasonably happy with my reply “Oh, hi Brad.” The alternative would probably have been a girlish squeal of delight before falling off and into the nearest hedge. Then he was gone, rolling effortlessly past me up the hill, leaving me grinning with the memory for the next 20 miles. If you’re wondering how he knew my name, it was because it was written on the back of my Muscular Dystrophy Campaign vest. Read on to find out how I, and many others, got to meet Bradley Wiggins last Sunday. There are also some more tips and a nutrition guide at the end.

A special thanks to Henry Iddon for providing all of the pictures used in this blog entry. You can find out more about him and his work at

Hever Castle Triathlon Preview

Hever Castle TriathlonI have graviously been invited by Wiggle (click the banner to the right to find out more about them) and the organisers of the Hever Castle Triathlon to come along and have a go at one of their events on the 29th and 30th September. I have chosen the Olympic distance race (1500m lake swim, 40km cycle and 10km run) on the 30th and will be taking the family along for a day out in the grounds of the castle. It looks like it will be an amazing event and should feature a large field as well as some top elite class triathletes. They offer a number of shorter races too, if you wanted to come and have a go in a spectacular setting. After the event I’ll be putting up my usual event review as well as some spectacular pictures and any new tips that I pick up along the way.

Ironman for Charity update 7th August 2012

Mystery SignatureIronman for charity update: Things have been quiet over the past couple of weeks as I am in the middle of a 4 week break between races. It’s pretty much been a case of getting my head down and doing some high quality training. Read on to find out why my chosen charity is the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign and some of the challenges that I’ve overcome to end up where I am today. You can also find out who this signature belongs to.
